Experts from IGAD and UNHCR engaged in a joint review of the Draft IGAD Policy Framework on Refugee Protection in Nairobi, Kenya on 25th – 27th April, 2023. A team from East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Cooperation (SADC) shared their experiences, lessons learnt and best practices in the formulation and implementation of regional mechanisms on refugee protection.

The team of experts which also included representation from the UNHCR Regional Bureaus for the East, Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region, UNHCR at the African Union and UNHCR Southern Africa Bureau, analysed the findings and recommendations arising out of national consultations on the status of refugee protection in the IGAD region.

The experts further reviewed the draft Policy Framework’s priority areas and the recommended measures in preparation of Member States technical experts’ review and validation workshops.
