The IGAD Support Platform

The IGAD Support Platform is a mechanism to advocate and offer a comprehensive regional response to forced displacement in the IGAD Region.

Forced Displacement in the IGAD Region

The IGAD region is host to 4.50 million refugees and asylum-seekers arising out of major conflicts within and beyond the region. The majority of refugees and asylum-seekers are from South Sudan, currently at 2.16 million.

Some 10.06 million people are internally displaced in the region as a result of conflict. An additional 4.13M persons are displaced due to natural disasters and the resultant effects of climate change.

Over 290,000 refugees have returned to their countries of origin in 2023.

The IGAD Support Platform

The IGAD Support Platform was launched at the December 2019 Global Refugee Forum to motivate and aggregate support from the international community, civil society and the private sector, to facilitate and coordinate the delivery of technical and financial support for forcibly displaced people as established by the Nairobi Declaration and Plan of Action.

IGAD is a regional economic activity in the East and Horn of Africa composed of: Djibouti, Eretria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda.
